Banteay Meanchey Reduces Sentences of Nearly 50 Prisoners for Khmer New Year and Vesak Bochea

BANTEAY MEANCHEY: Nearly 50 inmates in Banteay Meanchey Provincial Prison have had their sentences reduced for the occasion of the traditional Khmer New Year and Vesak Bochea.

The Deputy Governor of Banteay Meanchey Province, Ngor Mengchruon, chaired a meeting on the commutation of sentences and pardon for prisoners on the occasion of Khmer New Year and Vesak Bochea 2023 on Thursday morning, 9 February 2023.

The Director of the Banteay Meanchey Provincial Prison, Ung Siphan, said that 22 prisoners had seen their sentences commuted for the traditional Khmer New Year, and 24 more for Vesak Bochea, out of a total of nearly 1,600 inmates.

He explained that the pardons lasted for three months, six months and nine months each., and added that the Banteay Meanchey Provincial Prison has performed its duties and responsibilities in education, rehabilitation, vocational training, security, agriculture, handicrafts, human resource development and infrastructure development with high responsibility. In addition, the prison also has a health post run by the unit itself, with the health department in charge.
